I was tasked with building an entirely new Borg Interior Kit, but constructed over all of the old Borg Kit pieces, maintaining names and pivot points so that all of our old Borg maps would be automatically updated with the new kit pieces. There were several hundred existing pieces comprising a Room Kit, as Hallway Kit, a Platform Kit, as well as several other ancillary elements, the vast majority of which were updated.
This gallery shows one of those older maps, which got automatically updated with all of the newer Kit parts. All of the walls, ceilings, floors, platforms, and hand rails in every room and hallway got updated to the newer assets automatically.
You will also see a lot of older props in these shots, which we did not have time to fix up, and do not hold up very well on close inspection. However, I was surprised how well the old and new worked together, even if the assets themselves feel so disparate.
In addition to all of the work done on the kit itself, this map as well as a few others each got one or two days of work from me relighting the whole thing. However, Lighting and Atmosphere were really the only things I touched. This map layout, and the locations of all of its assets were created by someone else long before me.
This map actually served as the initial test-bed for the lighting and atmospherics updates I wanted to do to all borg maps, and what we would eventually base the Mirror Borg lighting and atmosphere on. I very much wanted to capture the hot, humid, grimy look that I believe Star Trek Voyager displayed best in its Borg Interiors. The use of strongly colored visible spotlights throughout is a direct homage to what we see in Voyager.
